C1.3 Urban Issues Podcast Presentation Project

Hello C1.3!!!

The government shutdown is over (for now) so we gotta get back to work!!! Our unit this week revolves around urban issues. As of 2018 82 percent of people in North America live in cities, and the numbers are high (49% or higher) in the rest of the world as well. As human beings begin to live in more and more crowded places, problems begin to arise. This week you will be listening to a podcast that deals with any of the myriad issues humans face when living in urban population centers. Your job will be thus:

1. Find a partner. (No solo presentations please.)
2. Choose a podcast. I will post a few episodes here but also look at the whiteboard for some suggestions. If you find something else please obtain my approval before continuing.
3. Create a presentation that contains the following.

•  A BRIEF overview/summary of the story. 
• Answers to these questions. 

1. What city and in what era did this story take place in?
2. Who were the people that were the most impacted in this story? 
3. What problems did the people face and what were the causes of the issue(s)?
4. Was there any attempt to solve the problem or prevent it from happening? What, in your opinion, could have prevented this issue from arising in the first place?
5. Why do you think this story could still be relevant today? Are there similar situations or issues that still come up?
6. What was your opinion of the podcast and the hosts? Would you recommend this podcast?

4. Create a 5 question kahoot based on the content of your presentation to give to the class!

5. Present and get some feedback from me on language, pacing, and content.

C1.3 Alternative Communication Project

Hello All

In addition to the projects located at efekta-projects.ef.com I would like to give you some alternative topics to research and present on.

First, check out this previous post about communications surveillance by world governments.

One group may choose to present on the topic of communications surveillance and whether or not it is necessary to keep us safe.

Other potential topics:

Smartphones: How have they evolved?

Smartphones: The environmental impact.

How the internet works: In a nutshell.

The internet: Blessing or curse?

Cloud Computing: What it is and why it matters.

Create your own!!!

Keep presentations under 10 minutes but be sure to have an introduction, a body (The bulk of your presentation), and a brief conclusion where you summarize what you presented to us.

Also, please create a brief Kahoot for us to play after your presentation. No more than 5 questions.

News Podcast C1.3

In this project you have a simple goal. Create a podcast with a partner about some recent news that you find fascinating, upload it, create comprehension questions, and allow us to listen to it in class as a listening exercise. 

You will be graded on content, language, and pronunciation. 
Step 1: Find your partner and agree on some news stories to discuss. 

Step 2: Tell me about your topic so I can approve or advise you on your topic. 

Step 3: Discuss what you want to talk about with your partner. Create an outline to use to organize your discussion. Note cards, etc. 

For example: You find a story about driverless cars and how it is going to change the world. You should summarize the story and BE SURE TO SOURCE IT! (WHERE DID IT COME FROM?) You talk about the main points of the story and then ask your partner a discussion question about the story and discuss your opinion about it, then your partner does the same for you. 
Step 4: Record your podcast using the Soundcloud app. It is easy to use and upload the podcast. Keep it under 5 minutes. 

Step 5: After recording your podcast create some multiple choice comprehension questions for us to answer when we listen to your podcast in class. Email me a  copy of these questions. (andrewnovakefny@gmail.com)

Step 6: Enjoy others podcasts in class and answer some comprehension questions to practice listening. Receive feedback on pronunciation and vocabulary.

For this week's project you will be pitching a new product to hungry investors. Most importantly, your product may be imaginary. You MUST be creative if you want to win!

Steps

1. Find a partner or partners. Work in groups of 2 or 3. If you don't have a partner come talk to me!!!
2. Think of a product (good, service, non-profit group) that you could market to the members of the class. 
3. For your presentation:

• Dress the part if possible. Look professional!
• Your presenation should address the following questions

1. What is your company called?
2. What is your product called?
3. What is your slogan?
4. Your names. 
5. A plan of the product/service. What does it do?
6. Business philosophy/purpose? 
1. Example: McDonalds - "To provide the fast food customer food prepared in the same high-quality manner world-wide that is tasty, reasonably-priced & delivered consistently in a low-key décor and friendly atmosphere." 
7. How much does it cost to manufacture this product?
8. How much would you sell your prodcut for? Would people pay this price?
9. Who are your target consumers?

4. Region? Country?
10. Who is your competition? Why are you better than them?
11. Why should we invest in your company?
