C1.1 Environment Podcast Listening

Hi all!

In our next class I would like to discuss something difficult to discuss when it comes to environmental activism: Our carbon footprints. How much do we, as individuals, contribute to climate change?

Please start by taking this carbon footprint quiz to see how many Earths we would need if everyone on Earth lived like you. Don't worry, I'll do this too and reveal my answer in class.

After you take your quiz and get the results, I want you to listen to this podcast about our impact on the Earth. What do the people in the podcast have to say about the topic and what is the problem they are dealing with? How would you deal with this issue? What is your answer to the question, "If you gave up flying, how would your life change?"

Andrew Fisher flew Air New Zealand from Shanghai to Auckland and Auckland to Buenos Aires.

The Future C2.3

Hello all!

For this weeks project I would like you to focus on creating a presentation about futurist Amy Webb.

Amy Webb is a quantitative futurist whose research focus is on artificial intelligence and how emerging technologies will transform the way we live, work, and govern. She is the author of The Signals Are Talking: Why Today's Fringe Is Tomorrow's Mainstream, a professor of strategic foresight at the NYU Stern School of Business, and the founder of the Future Today Institute, a leading future forecasting firm that helps leaders and their organizations prepare for complex futures. Now in its second decade, FTI advises Fortune 500 and Global 1000 companies, government agencies, large nonprofits, universities and startups around the world. Amy also publishes the annual FTI Emerging Tech Trends Report, which has now garnered more than 6.2 million cumulative views worldwide.

This video will give you a great introduction to Amy and what she does for a living as well. Her new book, 'The Big Nine,' which I could not recommend more, is an incredible book about the future of AI and the 9 Tech Firms that control nearly all AI development.

For your presentation watch the following video and read this article from the MIT technology review. Summarize her views on the future and present them in a 10 minute presentation. Your presentation should also include a brief biography of Amy Webb and her career achievements. Also, at the end of the presentation you should give your own opinion of how futurists like Ms. Webb can help our society and your own views on the future she predicts may happen.

War Crimes Committed by the USA during WW 2

C2.3 Field Trip Assignment.

At the Museum of the City of New York one of the large exhibitions is currently entitled Activist New York. On Monday we discussed what it means to be an activist and one example of an activist movement in the city's history. Currently at the Museum there are 5 activist movements that are being exhibited during our visit.

  • Economic Rights
  • Environmental Advocacy
  • Gender Equality
  • Immigration
  • Political and Civil Rights
  • Religious Freedom
What I would like you to do for our trip to the museum is choose one of these activist movements and write a comparison/contrast essay on one of these movements in America and a similar movement in your own country. This essay should be around 300 words and should be handed in to me by Friday, April 12th. So, when we are at the museum use your time to gather as much information as you can to use in your essay.

Also, please use this resource to give you some advice on the best way to formulate a comparison/contrast essay. Good luck and  have fun!

Also, the podcast Reveal has many episodes related to the environment.

  • Your presentation should address the following.
    • A brief summary of the podcast.
    • What is the environmental issue that is the core of the problem? Disaster? Resource Extraction? Extinction? Climate change?
    • What has caused this issue and who are the key players?
      • If the problem is human caused, what were the motivations of the key players? Who benefited and who lost?
      • If the problem was accidental in some way, what led up to the accident? What could have been done to prevent it? What, if anything, was learned as a result of the accident? Did anyone benefit from it? How? If people lost, what did they lose?

C1.3 Urban Issues Podcast Presentation Project

Hello C1.3!!!

The government shutdown is over (for now) so we gotta get back to work!!! Our unit this week revolves around urban issues. As of 2018 82 percent of people in North America live in cities, and the numbers are high (49% or higher) in the rest of the world as well. As human beings begin to live in more and more crowded places, problems begin to arise. This week you will be listening to a podcast that deals with any of the myriad issues humans face when living in urban population centers. Your job will be thus:

1. Find a partner. (No solo presentations please.)
2. Choose a podcast. I will post a few episodes here but also look at the whiteboard for some suggestions. If you find something else please obtain my approval before continuing.
3. Create a presentation that contains the following.

  •  A BRIEF overview/summary of the story.
  • Answers to these questions.
  1. What city and in what era did this story take place in?
  2. Who were the people that were the most impacted in this story?
  3. What problems did the people face and what were the causes of the issue(s)?
  4. Was there any attempt to solve the problem or prevent it from happening? What, in your opinion, could have prevented this issue from arising in the first place?
  5. Why do you think this story could still be relevant today? Are there similar situations or issues that still come up?
  6. What was your opinion of the podcast and the hosts? Would you recommend this podcast?
4. Create a 5 question kahoot based on the content of your presentation to give to the class!
5. Present and get some feedback from me on language, pacing, and content.

Good luck!

C1.3 Alternative Communication Project

Hello All

In addition to the projects located at efekta-projects.ef.com I would like to give you some alternative topics to research and present on.

First, check out this previous post about communications surveillance by world governments.

One group may choose to present on the topic of communications surveillance and whether or not it is necessary to keep us safe.

Other potential topics:

Smartphones: How have they evolved?

Smartphones: The environmental impact.

How the internet works: In a nutshell.

The internet: Blessing or curse?

Cloud Computing: What it is and why it matters.

Create your own!!!

Keep presentations under 10 minutes but be sure to have an introduction, a body (The bulk of your presentation), and a brief conclusion where you summarize what you presented to us.

Also, please create a brief Kahoot for us to play after your presentation. No more than 5 questions.
